Katrina Update #27Katrina Update #27We had a great time at the Kentucky Bourbon Festival in Bardstown, KY. I have added a new gallery with pictures we took there.
I also added a Katrina Timeline and an incredible survival story about Blackie, Ken, and Kenny Campo.
As the time of our return draws nearer, we find ourselves becoming more and more anxious about our return. A friend of ours from California is a Red Cross volunteer who is in Baton Rouge until October 4th. He says volunteer rescue workers have been quitting because they fear for their safety. So we have changed our plans slightly. We will still be going to our friend Keith's house on Tuesday, but on Wednesday we will be unloading the luggage from the Jeep we borrowed from Janis' sister and loading it up with water and food, and three of us will head into the city. Once there we will determine the condition of our home, as well as determine if we have electricity, before deciding whether to call the others in or leave again ourselves.
I got this great email from another out of town Coop's Place patron yesterday:
I wanted to share what became a wonderfull day at Coops Place last year for my wife and I Saturday of Labor Day weekend. We went to Coops Place after two recamendations, We sat at the bar and after a few minuites we met Kattai Barrow and had a great talk after some time she introduced us to Jeff (Coop) he sat and chatted with us for almost an hour after Coop got up Tom Rick sat next to us and we had great talk. (This was our first time in New Oleans.)
We were overwhelmed with how at home and kind everyone was. What I should say is the afternoon at Coops made our short trip and we look forward to getting back. And wanted to wish everyone good luck in the future.

Janis got a phone call from a friend of Amber's, who had been searching for her. In desperation, she googled "Amber Dodge" and found this site. That is exactly why I did it, and I am so happy has worked out well for so many people.
- Jesse called us. He is safe with a friend in Austin.
- Coop sent me an email stating that they arrived in Covington.
- Nagin is sticking to his plan for "resettlement," as it is now called, although he is drawing some criticism from others that the city won't be ready to support the number of people he is allowing back in. Already, plans to reopen the French Quarter have been pushed back. Everyone entering the city will get a two page brochure that starts out by saying that New Orleans remains a "hazardous site."
- I-10 has been opened west of the city, and the Causeway will open at 5AM on Monday. No tolls will be charged. I-55 has also been reopened.
- We heard a phone interview on CNN with Charlie Melancon, representative for St. Bernard Parish. He said that even having an army of insurance adjusters in the area, going from house to house would take "an eternity." He feels virtually every building in the parish will have to be demolished.
