Maker's Mark Barrels

Barrels of bourbon aging in a Maker's Mark warehouse. Each barrel holds 52 gallons. About 18% is lost to evaporation and absorption into the barrels during the aging process. When bottled, each barrel holds about 44 gallons. The barrels are then shipped to Scotland where they are used to make Scotch whiskey. When shipped, there are about 2 gallons of bourbon in the wood. Each barrel is charred for exactly 38 seconds to release the natural sugars in the wood, which add to the flavor of the bourbon.
